Each epithelial cell on the villus has about 500 projections called microvilli. The absorptive surface of the small intestine is increased 600-fold by its 6 million villi. Each villus contains capillaries surrounding a lymph vessel called a lacteal. The capillaries take up monosaccharides and amino acids; the lacteal takes up glycerol and fatty acids.
